From handheld to TV: dock or stream?
The sofa can be another place to use your library. First decide where the game runs, then check power, picture, controls, audio, and the route back to your handheld.

Documentation-based guide
Original explanation based on the official sources linked below. This is not a hands-on test, a benchmark, or a promise that every game and device combination works.
Choose where the game runs
Docked Deck: the game runs on the handheld; a cable carries its picture to the TV. PC Remote Play: the PC runs the game; a supported client receives the stream and sends controls back. Decide this first, because each route has a different point of failure.
Valve says docking does not add processing performance. A larger output mode is not evidence of higher game frame rates. Steam Deck FAQ (official source, opens in a new tab).
The guide covers a Steam Deck and Valve's documented Steam routes. It is not a universal setup guide for every handheld, television, or controller. Check regional device/app availability and each accessory's current specification.
Connect a docked Deck
For charging through a hub, Valve requires USB-C Power Delivery passthrough. Connect the dock's power, then a suitable HDMI or DisplayPort cable to the TV, select that TV input, and connect the Deck. Update the Deck and supported dock firmware through their official prompts. Valve's docking guide (official source, opens in a new tab).
Valve's dock lists HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, and up to 4K at 60 Hz or 1440p at 120 Hz. Those are output capabilities, subject to the complete cable/display chain. They are not a promise that a game renders at that resolution or frame rate. Official dock specifications (official source, opens in a new tab).
Start with a display mode the whole chain supports. Confirm a stable picture before changing game rendering settings; record output resolution and game resolution separately. If the TV shows no picture, check input and cable seating, try a known-working cable, and follow Valve's External Display Safe Mode procedure. Change one item at a time rather than replacing the whole setup.
Check controls and audio
- Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller through SteamOS Settings → Bluetooth, or connect a supported wired controller. Use the controller maker's pairing instructions.
- Open Steam → Settings → Controller → Test Controller Inputs to check buttons before launching a game.
- If the controller is missing, check Bluetooth discovery; Valve documents a Show all devices option. Reconnect a device that behaves unreliably.
- Confirm sound goes to the TV or intended headphones. TVs can appear as external audio outputs, and another connected device can receive the sound.
Valve's basic-use guide (official source, opens in a new tab) covers these checks. Game input support and specialised features still depend on the title and controller; a connected device is not proof every feature works.
Hybravell's practical check: try movement, menus, pause, and sound in one familiar game. Keep the handheld accessible until the external controls work. When a failure is limited to one title, record its input settings instead of assuming the whole dock is faulty.
Stream from a PC instead
Remote Play sends picture and sound from the host PC to the client; input travels back. The PC remains the machine running the game. Valve lists Steam Link clients including Android TV and Apple TV; check the current app for your device and region. Steam Remote Play (official source, opens in a new tab).
- Keep the host PC awake with Steam signed into the intended account.
- Install the official Steam Link client on a supported TV/client device, or use Steam on the receiving PC/Deck.
- Follow pairing and network checks, then launch a game available on the host.
- Test the complete route before adjusting image quality. For comparison, try a wired network where available and reduce competing traffic.
A stream can fail while local play is fine. Record the host, client, connection, and error. Remote Play does not grant a new store licence or prove the game would run locally on the client.
Return to handheld cleanly
Save and quit before ending the session. For streamed play, the running game and its save belong to the host environment; for local docked play, they belong to the Deck. If you will next launch a separately installed copy on another machine, check its supported save route and cloud status first.
Reconnect portable controls and check audio after undocking. Keep a short setup note: Deck/SteamOS version, dock, cable, TV mode, controller, and whether the game was local or streamed. That note makes a future change easier to diagnose without claiming the arrangement works for everyone.
