Raspberry Pi 1, Pi 5, Pi 400, Pico and Zero 2 boards laid out together

Hub 04 · Micro Bench

Small chips, real machines.

For the developer who wants code with consequences: boards worth owning, projects that finish in a weekend, and the bench truths.

Match the board to the project

Raspberry Pi Pico 2$5Dual Cortex-M33 or dual RISC-V cores, 520 KB SRAMChoose one CPU architecture; the ARM and RISC-V pairs do not run simultaneously. Programmable I/O supports custom hardware interfaces.
ESP32-S3Check board sellerDual LX7, Wi-Fi + BLE, vector inst.ESP32-S3 provides Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE; choose a development board with the required memory, pins and certifications.
Arduino Uno R4 WiFiCheck Arduino storeRenesas RA4M1 + ESP32-S3 coproA 32-bit Renesas microcontroller with an ESP32-S3 connectivity coprocessor and official Arduino documentation.
Teensy 4.1Check PJRC store600 MHz Cortex-M7, 1 MB RAMA 600 MHz Cortex-M7 board with libraries for audio and embedded projects. Check power and I/O limits before wiring.

Three weekends to hooked

  • Weekend one: a macro pad

A Pico 2, ten switches and CircuitPython's HID library. You will type on something you built by Sunday night.

  • Weekend two: a sensor that texts you

ESP32 + a soil moisture probe + a webhook. The plant lives, and you have shipped an IoT product with one dependency.

  • Weekend three: a synth voice

Teensy audio library, two potentiometers, one speaker. Real-time DSP with zero RTOS reading required.

Soldering truths

  • Temperature is not bravery

Follow the solder, flux, component and tool manufacturers’ temperature guidance. Use the appropriate tip and avoid prolonged heating; one setting is not suitable for every alloy or board.

  • Flux is not optional

Use flux appropriate to the solder and electronics being assembled. Follow its safety data sheet and cleaning instructions.

  • Buy the fume extractor

Rosin-based solder flux fumes can cause asthma. Use suitable local exhaust ventilation and follow the flux safety guidance; a small fan or carbon filter is not a universal assurance of protection.
